Discovering Quinta Camarena: A Sustainable Retreat in Alentejo, Portugal

When we decided to search for a place in Portugal, Costa Vicentina in the Alentejo felt like the perfect choice. The coastline is a protected natural park, and the inland areas are also safeguarded. This region still feels wild and authentic, with surfable beaches, rolling hills, and majestic oak trees. The quiet town of Cercal is nearby, surrounded by real food production: organic farms, natural cheese, local eggs, natural wine, and bread made from local grains.

Finding Our Dream Property

This property was the first one we visited, and we instantly knew it was meant for us. It had been a family’s summer home for twenty years, undergoing construction on and off for three decades. Unfortunately, ill health forced its owners to leave. When we found it, it was overgrown and falling apart, but we saw potential where others did not. What truly captivated us was the land: a valley framed by two hills, dense with trees and birds. Trails weave through the property, making every walk feel like a delightful discovery. We are nestled in the countryside, just fifteen minutes from the coast and a twelve-minute walk from town.

Building Around the Land, Not Over It

The renovation tested our resilience. We were building during the pandemic and facing hyperinflation. Deliveries stalled, and cost quotes were only valid for a week as material prices soared. We also wanted to preserve the ecosystem, so much of the work was done by hand rather than using heavy machinery. We worked around the trees instead of clearing them.

We renovated the existing units based on instinct, but for the new buildings— the hillside rooms and Camtina, our lounge and dining space— we enlisted local architect Miguel Peixinho. The hillside rooms embrace the natural incline of the hill, allowing guests to feel truly surrounded by forest. A five-minute hike leads to these rooms, and no cars are allowed, so guests begin to absorb the beauty of nature the moment they set off. Each of the seven rooms is a duplex, featuring two floors in an open space, with a balcony overlooking the hill.

At Camtina, we envisioned a lounge and dining area that feels like a friend’s living room. We designed an open kitchen so guests can watch our chefs at work. A long, handmade table encourages strangers to share meals and often forge friendships. Glass sliding doors throughout the space blur the lines between indoors and outdoors.

A Design Language Built by Hand

We took on the interior design ourselves—Cam as an artist and I, with a background in fashion and retail. Our goal was to create a cozy, warm space with personality, blending comfort and contemporary style. We used local materials: wooden ceilings and flooring paired with polished cement walls, Portuguese tile in every open shower, and hand-painted water-bowl sinks crafted by a local carpenter. Each room is unique, featuring different tiling, an antique piece, or a print of Cam's photography. We preserved the traditional Alentejo door with its postigo, a small linen-curtained window that once allowed neighbors to see who was passing by. Full-size windows open onto the forest, bringing in light that shifts throughout the day. Each room has its own front garden filled with wild mint, lavender, cactus, and jasmine.

Beyond our creations, we rely on local artisans whenever possible. We source handmade blankets from a local weaver, leather accessories, and hand-painted ceramics. We also love exploring local antique markets, often purchasing pieces simply because we adore them.

What the Pandemic Taught Us

Two weeks after moving in, the pandemic struck, and every vendor we had planned to work with closed. We had to adapt and work with what we had. My father, a retired electrician, began crafting lamps from old wine jugs and wood scraps. Cam's mum sewed pillows from leftover fabric. Cam built furniture from spare pallets, while I restored pieces left behind by the previous owners. By the time the pandemic eased, we had created a real collection of handmade items. The principles of reuse, recycle, and repurpose became integral to our design philosophy. Now, you’ll find cork art made from our own oak trees, recycled-fibre blankets, and antique treasure chests that double as bookshelves throughout the property.

A Place Designed to Be Left Alone In

Guests often mention the same things: the intimacy, the attention to detail, and the nature surrounding them. Much of this charm comes from the small hidden platforms we’ve built throughout the woods— a cozy sofa or hammock tucked away, providing a quiet counterpoint to the pool.

That same instinct guides our future plans. We aim to expand Camtina with a retail space, add new hillside studios, and renovate our original units— Villa do Laranjal, the Loft, and the Casita— to carry the same inviting feeling as the hillside rooms.
