Why 2026 Feels Like the Year We’ve Been Waiting for at Quinta Camarena

At Quinta Camarena, we have always believed that travel should slow us down, not speed us up. It should reconnect us with nature, with people, and with ourselves, rather than leave us feeling depleted.
So, when we read recent travel trend reports predicting that 2026 will be the year of slower, more meaningful and more authentic travel, it felt less like a new idea and more like a quiet affirmation: this is exactly why we created Quinta Camarena.
Slowing Down Is the Experience
Here in Alentejo, slowing down isn’t a concept, it’s a way of life. When guests arrive at Quinta Camarena, the shift is almost immediate. The noise fades, the pace softens, and days begin to unfold more naturally.
This sense of slowing down is woven into everything we do, but it’s perhaps most fully experienced through our Not So Serious Retreats.
These retreats were created as a gentle alternative to the rigid, over-scheduled retreats many of us have experienced. There’s no pressure to “transform,” no early morning alarms, and no expectations to be anything other than yourself. Instead, they offer space to rest, move, eat well, laugh, and reconnect in a way that feels human and unforced.
Whether guests join a retreat or stay with us as hotel guests, the invitation is the same: slow down and arrive fully.
Sustainability That Feels Personal
There is a growing desire for nature-based and sustainable travel, where travellers want to feel that their presence supports rather than strains the places they visit.
At Quinta Camarena, sustainability isn’t a checkbox, it’s embedded in how we live and host. Through our Not So Serious Retreats, guests experience this first-hand: shared meals made with ingredients from local producers and from our own garden, wines from nearby vineyards, and moments of connection with the people who shape this land.
By staying with us as a retreat guest or hotel guest, you become part of a small, intentional ecosystem that values community, land stewardship, and simplicity.
Boutique, Off-Grid and Intentionally Small
Another defining shift in travel for 2026 is the move away from large hotels towards boutique, off-grid places that feel personal and rooted in place.
Quinta Camarena was designed to be just that. We are intentionally small, surrounded by nature, and shaped by the rhythms of the land rather than the clock. You won’t find digital distractions in the rooms. Instead, there are sunny reading nooks, hammocks under trees, and endless trails to wander.
Our Not So Serious Retreats reflect this philosophy perfectly. We believe in the power of joy and laughter and connection between like-minded people. It's about finding balance, enjoyment, and connection without taking yourself too seriously.
Most mornings begin with either an energising yoga session or a beach trip for a morning surf. Afterward, we refuel with a delicious, healthy brunch to keep the good vibes (and energy) going. Afternoons usually bring the other main activity, yoga or surf, depending on the day. In between, we’ll mix in a wonderful hike along the stunning landscapes of the protected natural park of Vicentina Coast. There’s also time built in to do absolutely nothing.
Farm Stays: Reconnecting With the Land
Farm stays are becoming one of the most meaningful ways people choose to travel now, not because they’re rustic or trendy, but because they reconnect us with where things come from.
Portugal’s food and wine culture is becoming central to why people travel here, and Alentejo is finally being discovered for the depth of its culinary traditions.
Quinta Camarena is rooted in the land. Staying here means being surrounded by open countryside, gardens, and the quiet rhythms of rural life. Food doesn’t arrive anonymously, it’s grown nearby, harvested seasonally, and prepared with care. Our relationship with local farmers, winemakers, and producers is not curated for show; it’s part of everyday life.
During our retreats, food and wine are not side notes, they are central to the experience. Guests gather around long tables, tasting local wines, sharing stories, and enjoying meals that reflect the season and the land.
These shared moments are often what people remember most. They are simple, grounding, and deeply human, exactly what many of us are craving now.
This is farm-stay travel as it’s evolving in 2026 — not about “doing farm activities,” but about living in closer relationship with the land, even for a short while.
Nature, Space and the Luxury of Ease
In a world that feels increasingly crowded and noisy, more people are seeking off-the-beaten-path places where they can truly rest.
Quinta Camarena sits in the Alentejo countryside, close to the wild coastline of the Costa Vicentina, offering access to open landscapes, quiet beaches, and small village life. Our retreats allow guests to experience all of this without rushing but with enough structure to feel held, and enough freedom to feel spacious.
Why Our Not So Serious Retreats Matter
The Not So Serious Retreats are not about fixing yourself or escaping life — they’re about remembering how to be in it. They reflect everything we believe travel in 2026 should be:
Slow, meaningful, and rooted in place
Supportive of local communities
Connected to food, nature, and movement
Personal, intimate, and unforced
It’s incredibly rewarding to see the world shifting toward the values that shaped Quinta Camarena from the beginning. And it’s a privilege to welcome people who are ready to travel differently.
If 2026 is the year you choose to travel with more intention, to reconnect, and to experience somewhere real, whether through one of our Not So Serious Retreats or a quiet stay with us, we would love to welcome you.
